ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA
La Bastide-Clairence was a village purposely built during the Middle Ages to provide a small port of access of the Adour river for the Kingdom of the Navarre. It was populated by people from outside of the Basque Country and its peculiarity today is that it is a village where Gascon is spoken, rather than Basque ! Its regular streets and half timbered houses, give an excellent idea of the "Bastide" style.
Today, the village has become a thriving arts and crafts centre. A dozen craftsmen have been attracted to the vilalge where the work daily, maintaining standards of the highest quality.
Many sites in the village are remarkable, as much by their beauty as by their singularity. Only three villages in the Basque Country were classified "one of the most beautiful villages of France", one of which is La Bastide Clairence :
original 14th century structure still visible, the church dating from 1315, its 17th century Jewish cemetery and its Abbey of Belloc create an atmosphere of tranquility. Many pedestrian circuits are organized by the local Tourist Office. At Cambo-les-bains you will discover the Arnaga house (Edmond de Rostand Mansion). If you wish to visit prehistoric caves, those of Sare and Isturitz will enchant you. Bayonne offers its cathedral, its shops and its restaurants.
You will fall under the spell of Biarritz with its beaches and its architecture. Spain is very close : San Sebastian is only 65 km away with its market, the old city and the typical bars and restauratns ;The town of Bilbao is only one and a half hours and half by car. Its famous Guggenheim museum awaits you ...
Hoisting high the colors of Rugby, we also offer a whole range of other sports : the trinquet, surfing on the beaches of the coast (Anglet, Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz), 2 tennis courts 200 meters from the house, karting at 4 km and the 13 golfs courses less than an hour away, including Chiberta, le Makila, Arcangues, Ilbarirtz, Chantaco, le Phare
